John Hutchison

Church Sexton

John Hutchison began attending SUMC in June 1991 and has been actively involved ever since. He serves as the building’s custodian, which means he handle a variety of tasks, from cleaning and maintaining the facility to setting up rooms for different events.

Raleigh has always been home to John; he was born and raised here and decided to stay and build his life in this wonderful community. John is happily married with two grown adult children. Their family has a passion for RV travel, often hitting the road with their two beloved dogs to explore new places and make memories. They particularly enjoy trips to the mountains, where their son is currently attending Appalachian State University.

In addition to his work at SUMC and family life, he is a licensed private pilot—a pursuit that brings him immense joy. There’s nothing quite like the thrill and freedom of flying a plane. John is also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), having served in the U.S. Army during the Gulf War. His deployment took him to Saudi Arabia and Iraq as part of Operation Desert Storm, an experience that shaped him profoundly and deepened his appreciation for service and camaraderie.
