Vietnam Methodist Mission Church
In the past 25 years, GBGM (Global Board Global Ministries) has supported planting
churches and training pastors through Vietnam Mission Initiative. In the past 10 years, Bishop Hope served as the Spiritual Leader for the Methodist churches in Vietnam. After the 2024 Global Conference, we accomplished moving to the formation of Methodist Church of Vietnam.
The GBGM is still supporting Methodist churches in Vietnam through the Advance #14932A
Vietnam Methodist Mission Church has 2 missionaries in the country. GBGM supports congregational development, pastors’ salaries, economic development, and building projects.
Vietnam Methodist Mission Church is comprised of 39 churches with over 2,200 members. Most are home churches and are concentrated in the remote areas in Northern Highland and Central Highland, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta (Can Tho). See the map for the location and breakdown in the chart.
The Vietnam Methodist Mission Church is in need of preparing Vietnamese for ordination, training pastors and laity, including youth and women, developing teaching materials in Vietnam language, and renovating of places of worship. The church also supports multiple social ministries for children (Bibles & Backpacks) and education (Charis Academy, college scholarships).
Soapstone would like to have an ongoing partnership in ministries with Vietnam Methodist Mission Church. Soapstone has already supported several ministries:
· Travel fund for the Annual Meeting in 2023
· Funding for Charis Academy through the Fairley Fund in 2024 and 2025.
· Purchase of Vietnamese coffee from congregation in the Central Highland.
· Purchase of stoles made by members in Vietnam (2024)
· College scholarships for 2024-2025 and 2025-2026.
Proposed areas for ongoing support:
1. Charis Academy
The school, founded by Ms. Thao Nguyen (Pastor Vu’s wife), is funded entirely by
donations from individuals and churches in the US. It’s free for underprivileged children in Ho Chi Minh City (Thu Duc area).
- For the 2025-2026 school year, there are 35 students in 1st to 5th grade.
- The school uses the ACE Homeschool materials from the US, with a high school completion certificate suitable for colleges in the US and VN.
- Cost of $200 per student/month, inclusive (building, staff, materials, etc.)
- Continued funding will be needed.
- Ideally, funding prior to the start of the school year (August) would be helpful, but funding is welcome anytime during the year.
2. Bible and Backpack
This program extends to all children of the Methodist churches in VN, including additional children from the communities. Last year, over 500 backpacks ($15/pack) were distributed throughout the country. Timing:
- Funding collected/allocated by May
- Materials bought by July
- Distribution starts in July so packs can reach remote churches before the school year starts (late August/early September)
3. Planned “Chrismons and Carols” Mission Trip (Dec 2026)
We are planning a mission trip during the Advent season, visiting 2 churches in Ho Chi Minh City and 2 churches in Hue. We will also visit Charis Academy. We will introduce
Chrismons & their meanings, sing carols, and make Chrismons for decoration in the church.
All donations will go through the GBGM website.
- Advance #14932A
- At the bottom of the page, there is a box “Please note the purpose of your gift”. Type in the ministry that your donation should go to, for example, Charis Academy or Bible and Backpack, etc.
