They Walked by Faith:
Life Lessons from Old Testament Characters

Sundays September 29 – November 17
Esther, a queen who saved her people. Job, who found comfort in God,
even among the ash heap. Ruth, a loyal daughter-in-law who faced an unpredictable future with courage. And Hannah, whose cries to God turn to shouts of joy. What do these characters with character have to teach us about walking by faith?

Mark 13:1-8; 1 Samuel 1:4-20
Pastor Mitzi Johnson preaching

“The Care of Troublesome People” – This week’s scripture, the last in our series of Old Testament characters, introduces us to the story of Hannah, whose personal pain and isolation keep her in a constant state of emotional upheaval, her husband Elkanah who doesn’t quite understand, a tone-deaf priest named Eli, and a gloating second wife no one would want to sit with at Thanksgiving dinner. In other words, they’re a group of people with failings and foibles just like us. How do we in the church honor God and love our neighbor as we care for troublesome people?
