Gretchen SheaDirector of Discipleship
Born a preacher’s kid, the church is the last place in the world Gretchen thought she’d end up working. In high school, it was also the last place she wanted to be. During her freshman year of college, she returned to church thanks to the outreach of the chaplain.Just after college, she and her husband Chip found a church home. It was there that she felt nudged to serve on a youth ministry team. Gretchen was led to see the call in her life and to keep an open mind and heart to where God was leading her. After seven years as a youth ministry servant, Gretchen went into full-time youth ministry. Seventeen years later, she moved to her current role as Director of Discipleship at Soapstone UMC.
This role crosses many ministry areas. Gretchen describes it this way: What it boils down to for me is helping others see God working in their lives and in the lives of others, helping people find ways to respond to God’s love and grace in their lives by serving others, and encouraging people to discover spiritual discipline practices that move them into encounters with the Risen Lord.
If she wasn’t working at Soapstone, she admits she’d like to be a Southwest flight attendant. She enjoys reading a good mystery and playing with her chocolate lab Bojangles in her spare time. Gretchen lives in Raleigh with her husband Chip. They have three adult sons, Jordan, Benjamin and Matthew, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.
