Gretchen Shea

Director of Discipleship and Missions

Gretchen Shea started her role of Director of Discipleship in 2014, after serving as the Director of Youth Ministries at Soapstone UMC for the previous nine years. After completing her Master of Arts in Christian Education in 2007, Gretchen discovered new ways to serve God and the church. Under the umbrella of discipleship, Gretchen works with adult ministries, mission teams and projects, hospitality and evangelism, and communications. This role crosses many ministry areas. Gretchen loves helping others see God working in their lives. She enjoys helping people find ways to respond to God’s love and grace in their lives by serving others while encouraging people to discover spiritual discipline practices that move them into encounters with the Risen Lord. Gretchen’s door is always open and all are welcomed to drop in for conversation or a prayer.

Gretchen is a life-long United Methodist and preacher’s kid who grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She moved to NC in 1986 to attend High Point University, which is where she met her husband, Chip, and they made High Point their home. In 1996 the Shea family, now with three sons, moved to Burlington where Gretchen began working full-time in youth ministry. Their growing family now includes two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren. They also are pet lovers with two dogs, Bojangles and Oakley, and a cat named Specs (short for Spectacles).
